An Innovative Approach to Mathematics Education by Jaehun Kim

Jaehun Kim's Gae Plus Yu is a unique math brand that offers an efficient learning system. The system is comprised of two books: the 'Concept book' and the 'Drill book', each offering different features and colors. When combined, these two books form a single circle, symbolizing the completeness of the learning system. This innovative design allows students to customize their learning experience, leading to effective and rapid results.

The design of Gae Plus Yu is not just innovative, but also practical. The 'Concept book' and 'Drill book' are bound together using a temporary adhesive, allowing them to be easily detached for individual use. This provides students with the flexibility to use each book as needed, enhancing the learning experience. Furthermore, the use of spot color printing and holographic foil on a matte finish adds to the design's aesthetic appeal.

Technical specifications of the Gae Plus Yu workbooks are tailored to the needs of different age groups. The elementary school size is 220 mm x 15 mm x 300 mm, weighing 0.2kg, while the middle school size is 215 mm x 12 mm x 285 mm, weighing 0.16kg. Both versions are made from 250g art paper, ensuring durability and ease of use.

The design process of Gae Plus Yu was a collaborative effort, with contributions from designers Seyeon Jeong, Minyoung Lee, and Jieun Lee, and creative director Sanghyun An. The project began in March 2021 and was completed in October 2021 in Seoul. The workbook is currently being sold in Korea.

Research played a crucial role in the development of Gae Plus Yu. Recognizing the need for a systematic learning system, Visang developed this innovative math workbook, which has become a representative math workbook in Korea, with annual sales of more than 400,000 copies and total sales over 40 million. The design faced challenges in overhauling the existing system and proposing a new structure that fosters organic learning. However, the team successfully overcame these challenges, leading to an innovative learning system that allows students to customize their own set of textbooks.

The Gae Plus Yu workbook has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Education, Teaching Aid and Training Content Design Award in 2022. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
