The Night Sky: A Vintage English-Inspired Residential Design

Creating a Classic and Modern Atmosphere with British Elegance

The Night Sky is a residential design project by Jau-Siang Li, Steven Sun, and Pei-Ling Liu that draws inspiration from vintage English style. With a combination of classic furnishings, vintage mirrors, iron shelves, and wooden walls, the design exudes a classic but modern atmosphere. By incorporating blue paint, blue wallpaper, crystal white tiles, and wall lamps, the space is adorned with a touch of elegance. The designers have successfully combined spacious layouts with hotel-style hospitality to create a unique and inviting ambiance.

What sets The Night Sky apart is its contemporary imagery combined with a vintage British style. The designers aimed to create a hotel-like space while avoiding the clichés of a retro style. To achieve this, they incorporated contemporary and textured classic furniture into the project. The design techniques employed create layers of different materials in the same tone, evoking the atmosphere of vintage England and contemporary hotel hospitality.

The realization of The Night Sky involved the use of various materials and techniques. Art paint, crystal white tiles, ironwork, wall lamps, masonry flooring, and woodwork cabinets were all utilized to bring the design to life.

The project spans 115 square meters and consists of four rooms. The open plan of the public area creates an airy interior space, while carefully selected furnishings such as sofas, chairs, and desks contribute to a harmonious and tranquil atmosphere. To eliminate rigid and primitive distinctions within the space, the designers trimmed the squared ceilings and removed the beams, replacing them with curved shapes. The final touches of brown tones, antique wood tones, and blue paint give the space an elegant look.

The Night Sky can be described with tags such as hospitality style, hotel style, English style, English elegance, and archetypal. It was brought to life by the collaborative efforts of Jau-Siang Li, Pei-Ling Liu, and Steven Sun.

In terms of functionality, The Night Sky is designed to provide a welcoming and comfortable experience. The space is decorated in a brown tone, and an open approach was adopted to create a spacious base. The wood-grain flooring material is used to divide the space from the entrance, extending to the TV wall with a curved pattern and blue palette, evoking a sense of British elegance. The flexible areas are defined by matching furnishings with a similar color palette.

The Night Sky was realized between January 2021 and June 2021 in New Taipei City, Taiwan. The designers conducted extensive research to bring their vision to life. The hotel-like foyer sets the tone for the entire space, with a calm and textured circular iron partition creating an impressive introduction to the public realm. Recessed linear lighting with a warm, yellow glow was used to match the wooden space, enhancing the vintage feel of a British hotel. The design embraces a spacious and non-pressurized approach, incorporating curved forms and linear grooves to create visual extension and different layers.

Overcoming the challenges of creating a vintage British style without overwhelming the space was a key aspect of The Night Sky's design. The designers achieved this by incorporating a variety of materials and carefully planning the project. Crystal white tiles, blue paint, iron chandeliers, and circular iron inset glass screens were used to clearly define the zones of the public area, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

The Night Sky is a testament to the designers' ability to create an English elegance with wooden tones, metal chandeliers, and vintage mirrors. By incorporating blue paint and crystal white tiles, they have successfully achieved a harmonious and impressive visual effect. The open plan of the space, combined with carefully selected furnishings, creates an elegant atmosphere that is sure to delight the client.
