String in the Tail: A Fusion of Art and Jewelry

Designer Mandy Morris Transforms Siamese Fighting Fish Inspiration into Award-Winning Bangle

When the flamboyance of a Siamese fighting fish meets the artistry of a seasoned designer, the result is a stunning piece of jewelry that transcends the ordinary. Mandy Morris, renowned for her unique designs, has once again pushed the boundaries of conventional jewelry design with her latest creation, "String in the Tail". This award-winning bangle, inspired by the fluid movement and eye-catching flamboyance of the Siamese fighting fish, is a testament to Morris's ability to combine reality with abstract design.

The "String in the Tail" is not just a bangle, but also a bracelet, featuring a three-strand string of pearls as an adjustable catch. This unique design combines figurative and abstract elements, making the metal seem light and almost molten. Handmade from repurposed 18ct white gold, the bangle is adorned with natural yellow and white diamonds and pearls, adding to its aesthetic appeal.

Morris's creation is a perfect blend of traditional jewelry making skills and new laser welding techniques. The fluidity of the fin shapes was achieved through enhanced metal carving skills, while the clean, straight diamond-set edges were created using laser welding. The selection of 156 matching natural yellow diamonds from a pool of 450 diamonds further adds to the uniqueness of the piece.

The bangle's adjustable string of pearls not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also enhances its functionality. The wearer can adjust the length to fit their wrist, adding a playful element to the piece. The soft touch of the pearls against the skin further enhances the wearing experience.

The "String in the Tail" was designed in January 2021 and completed in April 2021 in York, UK. It was exhibited at Goldsmith Hall, London in May 2021 and won four craftsmanship and design awards, including The Boodles award for fine jewellery. The design was also awarded Silver in A' Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design Award in 2022, a testament to its outstanding design and innovation.

Behind the creation of the "String in the Tail" was a meticulous process of research and design. Morris spent time studying the movement and decoration of Siamese fighting fish, sketching the layout of the design by hand at scale. The hand carving skill for the fin detail was perfected over time, and a silver prototype for the catch was created. The result is a unique design that perfectly captures the flamboyance and fluidity of the Siamese fighting fish, transforming it into a stunning piece of wearable art.

In conclusion, Mandy Morris's "String in the Tail" is a testament to the power of inspiration and the beauty of craftsmanship. It is a unique piece of jewelry that perfectly combines art and functionality, pushing the boundaries of conventional jewelry design. It serves as a reminder of the endless possibilities that can be achieved when creativity and craftsmanship come together.
