Baidu Wiki: China's First Virtual Zoo

Bringing Wildlife to Your Screen

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, people have become more aware of the power of nature and the importance of animal protection. Baidu Meux, the designer behind Baidu Wiki, has created China's first virtual zoo, allowing people of all ages and abilities to watch animals live online anytime, anywhere.

Baidu Wiki's virtual zoo offers a unique and immersive experience, allowing users to observe animals in their natural habitats. Through live scenes, viewers can get a "close-up" look at the lives of various species while learning about biodiversity and conservation.

One of the standout features of Baidu Wiki is its stray cat warming program. This initiative aims to care for and rescue stray cats, promoting public welfare and compassion towards animals. Baidu Brain AI technology is utilized to identify stray cats, recognize injuries or illnesses, and provide timely medical attention. Volunteers also ensure that the cats receive daily food and water.

Baidu Wiki's virtual zoo is accessible on both iOS and Android devices, making it convenient for users to engage with the platform. The user interface is designed to be intuitive and user-friendly, providing a seamless experience for individuals of all ages.

Interactivity is a key aspect of Baidu Wiki's virtual zoo. Users can not only watch the animals but also engage with them through live interaction. The platform offers a wealth of knowledge and videos related to animals, combining audio and visual elements to enhance the learning experience.

The development of Baidu Wiki's virtual zoo began in Beijing in May 2020 and was completed in the same month. The platform was made available on Baidu Applet, allowing users to access it easily. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted, including industry research, brainstorms, and user interviews. The team also observed over 20 animal types to ensure the designs accurately represented each species.

Despite the challenges faced during the design process, such as creating a visually appealing event-page and configuring the positions of multiple live animals, Baidu Wiki's virtual zoo successfully brings a lively and engaging experience to users. The platform has received recognition for its innovative approach, winning the Iron A' Design Award in the Mobile Technologies, Applications, and Software Design category in 2022.

Baidu Wiki's virtual zoo not only provides entertainment but also serves as a valuable educational tool. By bringing wildlife to screens around the world, it fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world and encourages a sense of responsibility towards animal welfare.
