Forrest: A Monolithic Bench Redefining Elegance and Functionality

The Forrest bench, designed by Giuliano Ricciardi, is a true testament to the power of design in creating meaningful connections. This monolithic masterpiece redefines the concept of a bench, elevating it to a symbol of elegance, functionality, and unity. With its minimal shape and projecting structure covered with porcelain stoneware, the Forrest bench stands out as a unique and innovative piece.

What sets the Forrest bench apart from others is its ability to perfectly emulate the appearance of various materials, such as stone, wood, or metal, while maintaining the technical advantages that these materials typically lack. The use of porcelain stoneware not only enhances the bench's aesthetic appeal but also ensures its durability, lightness, and resistance.

The structure of the Forrest bench is completed by a lightened corten support, which adds a touch of sophistication and elegance. The corten support, with its plasma-cut pattern, creates an almost ethereal presence, blending seamlessly with the overall design. Technological advancements play a crucial role in the realization of the Forrest bench. The corten support is crafted using plasma cutting techniques, while the porcelain stoneware is shaped using waterjet cutting. Measuring 2400 mm x 800 mm x 400 mm, the Forrest bench is designed to provide comfort and relaxation in various settings. Whether placed in an urban landscape, a park, a museum, or a residential space, this bench serves as a focal point, inviting individuals to come together, engage in conversation, and find solace in its presence.

The interaction with the Forrest bench is a seamless experience. The bearing structure, made of MDF, features a door on the side, providing access to a storage space for items like mats or books. The corten support, while primarily serving a decorative function, adds stability and visual interest. The strip LED below the bench offers a soft touch of light, creating a warm and inviting ambiance for both indoor and outdoor settings.

The Forrest bench project was initiated and completed in September 2019 in Taranto. It received the first prize in the "Design With Gres" contest organized by SpazioBianko, with Arch. Bernardo D'Ippolito, CEO of KinoWorkshop srl, as the jury president. The bench was prototyped and exhibited at the award ceremony during the Gres & Dress event.

Market research analysis revealed a common perception of benches as objects with poor aesthetics and low-quality materials. The Forrest bench challenges this notion by offering a refined design that enhances any space while promoting sustainable consumption of natural raw materials.

Overcoming creative and technical challenges, the design team successfully achieved a sense of lightness in the monolithic structure. By replacing heavy materials like marble with MDF and porcelain stoneware, they were able to maintain the bench's visual continuity and create a storage space within the structure. The corten support adds a touch of elegance and completes the overall design of the bench.

With its sleek and sophisticated design, the Forrest bench redefines the concept of a bench, elevating it to a work of art. It embodies the essence of connection, rest, and elegance, inviting individuals to come together, engage in meaningful conversations, and find solace in its presence.
