Shuttles of Light: A Residence Designed to Embrace Natural Light

An Innovative Design by Wang Pin-Ho and Wang Pin-Shian

Shuttles of Light in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, is a detached house that embodies the concept of creating a wonderful living space for a family of three generations. The designers, Wang Pin-Ho and Wang Pin-Shian, aimed to maximize natural light and create a harmonious flow of light and life throughout the residence.

The unique strength of Shuttles of Light lies in its ability to provide an abundance of natural light while maintaining a sense of privacy and comfort. The top floor of the house is dedicated to a comfortable and independent living space for the couple, allowing them to stay connected with each other and the world around them. The mezzanine level, featuring a retractable floor and floating steel stairs, serves as a beautiful transition between the upper and lower levels, introducing even more light and creating a sense of continuity throughout the home.

The sleeping area on the upper level is adorned with soft and tranquil lighting, creating a peaceful and serene atmosphere. The hallway, with its view of the sky, provides a bright space for changing clothes and getting ready for the day. On the lower level, a peaceful living area and a study are flooded with ample light thanks to the tall windows. Finally, the mezzanine level connects and provides comfort, making it the perfect spot for relaxing and unwinding after a long day.

The realization of Shuttles of Light involved the use of innovative materials and technologies. The lotos paint, applied through a special process, gives the walls and ceilings a mineral-like texture, adding a unique touch to the overall design. The key feature of the design is the floating steel stairs, which not only provide a strong structure but also introduce light and connect the upper and lower levels seamlessly.

With a seven-story layout and an indoor space covering 413.7 square meters, Shuttles of Light offers a spacious and inviting living environment. The design challenges the typical traffic flow indoors, with the living room and kitchen swapping locations. This change enhances the independence and interconnectivity of each area, creating a dynamic and functional living space.

Shuttles of Light was completed in September 2022 in Taiwan. The design incorporates extensive research on the needs of each resident and the utilization of ample areas for practical purposes. By reducing the footprint for partitions and stairs, the design maximizes free space and natural lighting, resulting in a home that is both visually stunning and environmentally conscious.

The minimalist design concept of Shuttles of Light provides flexibility and easy maintenance. Additionally, the use of reservoir sludge, which was originally destined for a landfill, showcases the designers' commitment to sustainability. Through modification technology, the sludge was transformed into a waterproof additive and manually applied to create a natural texture, giving the waste a new purpose in the space.

Shuttles of Light has been recognized for its exceptional design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contribute to quality of life improvements, and make the world a better place.
