On Cloud Nine: A Unique Chinese-inspired Restaurant Design

Creating a Cultural Experience Through Design

This project by K.E.A. Design Consultants, Inc. uses diverse Chinese allusions to metaphorically represent Chinese food culture and aims to help customers understand the importance of cultural continuity.

Passing through the entrance of On Cloud Nine, visitors are greeted by a mesmerizing sight - a running waterfall cascading down from the ceiling. The circular tubes, adorned with hand-drawn designs resembling the subtle gradation of clouds, develop in parallel, creating a captivating visual effect. The stage lights project the name of the restaurant onto the circular tube curtains, adding to the immersive experience. The contrast of light and shade creates the illusion of wreathed mist, establishing the scenic theme and conception of the space.

The design draws inspiration from the ambitions of the Chinese ancient literati, who carried heavy book boxes to the metropolis and joined competitions to pursue high-ranking positions. The designer ingeniously transforms the figure of a book box into partitions and pendant lamps, paying homage to the literati's aspirations. Additionally, the pendant lamps take inspiration from the "Fu" pot used during the Qin and Han dynasties, symbolizing the wisdom of ancestors.

As customers enjoy delicious cuisine at On Cloud Nine, they are not only nourished physically but also spiritually through the stories of ancient times. The design seamlessly integrates cultural elements into the dining experience, allowing customers to gain a deeper appreciation for Chinese food culture and its rich history.

The base of Cloud Nine connects two floors, presenting a design challenge of ensuring a smooth traffic flow in a narrative way. To address this, the visual effect of the stairs connecting the first floor and the basement is designed as an axis of the space, guiding the flow of visitors.

The wooden curtains in the restaurant are not just decorative elements; they are functional too. These curtains can descend and rise, allowing for the separation of guests between different tables. In crowded situations, two boxes can be merged into one, ensuring flexibility and adaptability in the space.

The design also incorporates the sacred animal of the Chinese culture - the dragon. The nation has worshipped dragons for centuries, and legends describe them as having variable appearances. The designer reinterprets the image of dragons in a new and unique way, adding an element of mystique and cultural significance to the overall design.

On Cloud Nine was realized in 2014 and is located at 1F., No.10, Sec. 2, Zhongzheng Rd., Tamsui Dist., New Taipei City, Taiwan (R.O.C.). The project duration was from December 2014 to present.

This exceptional design by K.E.A. Design Consultants, Inc. has received recognition for its ingenuity and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2016 for its outstanding contribution to interior space, retail, and exhibition design. The design showcases strong technical and creative skills, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for its visitors.
