Wugu Market: A Modern and Humane Shopping Experience

Revitalizing the Traditional Market Concept

The Wugu district in New Taipei, Taiwan, has been experiencing rapid population growth, yet lacks a local market to cater to the daily needs of its residents. To enhance the quality of life and convenience for citizens, designer Chung-I Shih has transformed the first floor of an idle three-dimensional parking lot into a modern market. This innovative project breaks away from the traditional market concept, solving problems and driving economic activity in the area.

Different from the bustling and complex environment of traditional markets, Wugu Market aims to provide a new and improved shopping experience for consumers. By importing store specifications and upgrading the pavement and sewage system, the market offers a fresh and modern atmosphere. The design also incorporates a raw and cooked food separation system, providing specialized equipment and creating a more hygienic and efficient environment. These changes overturn the stereotypes and patterns of traditional markets, leading people of all ages into a modern and humane shopping space.

The stalls in Wugu Market cover a wide range of industries, emphasizing a one-stop shopping experience for customers. The fresh area introduces refrigerated display cabinets and a separate low-temperature meat processing area, ensuring that raw food is processed in a clean environment and delivered to consumers in the freshest condition. The cooked food area is equipped with an electrostatic oil fume system, reducing oil fume pollution and purifying the air inside the market. These technological advancements enhance the overall shopping experience and promote a healthier and safer environment.

Spanning across 2327 square meters, Wugu Market is a testament to the commitment of creating a unique and sustainable market that aligns with the local culture. Inspired by the image of green bamboo shoots, the design incorporates elements of sustainability, promotion, and interaction. The natural color cement floor represents the green bamboo shoots, while the wood grain color and line grille create a sense of being in a bamboo forest. The logo design also pays homage to the region's famous natural landscapes.

One of the key challenges in designing Wugu Market was to integrate the local specialties of the Wugu district: green bamboo shoots and bamboo. The use of non-slip tiles on the ground ensures safety, while modern hardware equipment creates a hygienic environment. The result is a market that not only meets the needs of the community but also reflects the unique identity and characteristics of the area.

Completed in May 2022, Wugu Market has already garnered recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Wugu Market stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

Wugu Market is not just a market; it is a symbol of progress and a testament to the power of design in transforming communities. By reimagining the traditional market concept and incorporating modern technologies and sustainable practices, Chung-I Shih has created a space that enhances the daily lives of Wugu residents and drives local development. With its unique blend of tradition and innovation, Wugu Market is set to become a landmark in the district, attracting visitors from near and far.
