Ying Li, a talented designer known for her affinity for geometric shapes, drew inspiration from the irregularity of nature and sought to transform it into regular geometric forms. The result is a pair of brooches that beautifully depict mountains, reflected water, and distant peaks through overlapping triangles. This design not only captures the beauty of nature but also simplifies the design process, making it applicable to various products.
The Mountain brooches are made of 18k white gold and set with 11.76ct natural spinels and 1.415ct diamonds. The meticulous craftsmanship ensures that each gemstone fits perfectly within the triangular structure, creating a harmonious composition. The spinels, with their unique shapes and colors, add a touch of individuality to each piece, reminiscent of the diverse trees found in mountains.
Measuring at 35.58mm x 28.53mm x 7.78mm and 35.77mm x 28.78mm x 7.98mm, the Mountain brooches are designed to be versatile. They can be worn individually or combined in various positions on the collar, lapel, or cuff. The two mirrored pieces can be rotated and arranged in different ways, allowing for playful and creative interactions with the design.
Ying Li's design project for the Mountain brooches began in March 2022 and concluded in September 2022 in Zhejiang, China. Throughout the process, the designer faced two main challenges: ensuring the precise fit of the gemstones within the triangular structure and maintaining consistent color tones. Each spinel required a unique 3D model for the stone setting, adding complexity and time to the production process.
As Ying Li intended, the Mountain brooches serve as a reminder of nature's calming influence in our busy urban lives. By wearing this piece of jewelry, one can experience a moment of tranquility and reconnect with the beauty of the natural world. The design encapsulates the designer's vision of transforming complexity into simplicity, creating a meaningful and visually striking piece of wearable art.
The Mountain brooches by Ying Li were awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2023. This prestigious accolade recognizes the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of the design, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The Mountain brooches exemplify the designer's technical and creative skills, contributing to the improvement of quality of life and making the world a better place.
