Setoff: A Unique Blend of Design and Functionality

Chang Ming Hu's Innovative Approach to Commercial Space Design

An exploration of Chang Ming Hu's award-winning design, Setoff, a compound exhibition and sales store of kitchenware located in the heart of Taipei city, offering a unique blend of design and functionality.

Setoff, a unique commercial space designed by Chang Ming Hu, is an innovative blend of design and functionality. Located in the bustling downtown area of Taipei city, this three-storey high compound exhibition and sales store of kitchenware is a testament to the designer's ability to create a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

The store's design was inspired by its proximity to the city's department stores and the high foot traffic in the area. Chang Ming Hu aimed to create a design that would increase interaction with pedestrians and highlight the diverse and comfortable brand value of the exhibits. The result is a space that is inviting, engaging, and reflective of the brand's values.

What sets Setoff apart from other commercial spaces is its unique layout and design elements. The first and second floors each house two exhibition areas, while the third floor features an additional exhibition area and office space. The designer used materials close to nature and colors with a low degree of color for the ceiling, floor, and wall, combined with lines and lights, to adequately set off the beautiful appearance of the exhibits.

The design of Setoff was realized through a combination of innovative design techniques and technologies. The low-color foggy gray wall displays building materials and hardware samples in a row, while the wall of concrete paint brings out the simple texture of the city. The light belt connecting the ceiling and the wall gives the space a sense of extension, and the ceiling design highlights the design details.

The design of Setoff faced several challenges, primarily revolving around the need to accommodate the changing exhibits. The designer had to choose colors and materials that were easy to match and present the unique details of the design. Despite these challenges, Chang Ming Hu managed to create a design that is both versatile and visually stunning.

Setoff is not just a commercial space; it's a testament to Chang Ming Hu's innovative approach to design. It's a space that invites interaction, showcases a variety of exhibits, and reflects the brand's values. And it's no surprise that this unique design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2023, a testament to its outstanding expertise and innovation.
