Villa Bianca: A Minimalist Masterpiece by Alexander Yonchev

Reimagining Traditional Bulgarian Architecture with a Modern, Minimalist Twist

Delve into the design journey of Villa Bianca, a private seaside house in Bulgaria, reimagined and transformed by Alexander Yonchev from Simple Architecture. This award-winning design stands as a testament to the power of minimalist aesthetics and the beauty of simplicity.

Derived from a vision to create a light, elegant, and ethereal atmosphere, Villa Bianca is a stunning example of modern architecture. The design is dominated by the breathtaking sea view and the constantly changing colours of the surrounding nature. Both the interior and the exterior are adorned in shades of white, with the only colourful touch being the works of art present in the house.

The project involved the partial reconstruction and complete visual transformation of an existing house built in pseudo-traditional Bulgarian style. The original structure, characterized by overlapping architectural elements and a multitude of materials, was transformed into a minimalist and contemporary masterpiece. The result is a contrasting, memorable, and unique piece of architecture.

The house, with a total built area of 540m2 on a land area of 817m2, is made of a concrete structure and brick walls. The exterior cladding is done entirely in one material: large format white tiles. Light grey tiles are used for the exterior pavement, while the interior pavement is done in microcement. The design's technical specifications and material choices reflect a commitment to minimalism and simplicity.

The three-story house includes a large common area, comprising a living room, kitchen, and dining room. It also houses four bedrooms, four bathrooms, two toilets, and various storage and service rooms. The furnishing, with its plastic, abstract, and non-standard forms, was carefully selected to create the overall feeling of being in an art gallery.

The project, which started in September 2021 in Sozopol and finished in June 2022, faced several challenges. The most significant was reducing the cluster of geometries of the existing house and emphasizing the constructive principle of the building by making some spatial and organizational improvements to the interior. Despite these challenges, the design team successfully transformed the house into a minimalist haven.

Villa Bianca's design excellence was recognized with a Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2023. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. Villa Bianca, with its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, certainly fits this description.
