Reviving Simplism: Jinqiao Ouyang's Villa Transformation

Award-Winning Villa Design Embraces Minimalism and Heritage

In the heart of Chengdu, a 2003 villa undergoes a remarkable transformation, embodying the essence of simplism and the cherished memories of a generation. Jinqiao Ouyang, an advocate of minimalistic design, redefines residential spaces with his latest project, Simplism Exploration, earning the prestigious Iron A' Design Award for his innovative approach.

Stepping into the villa, one is immediately struck by the harmonious blend of clean lines and graceful forms. Ouyang's design philosophy, deeply influenced by the works of Le Corbusier and Carlo Scarpa, shines through in the villa's uncluttered aesthetic. The use of concrete and varnish pays homage to the past while embracing the future, creating a living space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The villa's unique properties lie in its ability to balance the old with the new, crafting a space that is undeniably modern yet steeped in personal history.

The renovation process was a technological feat, with Ouyang and his team reimagining the villa's internal structure. By sealing internal patios and repositioning staircases, they maximized the living area, ensuring each of the five floors and the 100-square-meter garden were utilized to their full potential. The choice to retain the original concrete pillars serves as a reminder of the building's origins, grounding the design in authenticity and resilience.

Functionality is at the forefront of Simplism Exploration. Ouyang's strategic alterations, such as the relocation of the staircase and the expansion of the car park, enhance the villa's usability. The introduction of a spiral staircase not only saves space but also transforms the flow of light within the home, affecting the ambiance and mood. The color palette, dominated by black, white, and cement gray, is timeless, ensuring the villa's design remains relevant and stylish for years to come.

Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, Ouyang's team completed the ambitious project within 16 months. They tackled technical hurdles, such as waterproofing the basement and constructing a robust boundary wall, with innovative solutions. The spiral staircase, a focal point of the design, was produced using 3D technology, showcasing the seamless integration of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques.

The villa's transformation is a testament to Ouyang's dedication to simplism and his ability to create serene, organized spaces that resonate with the inhabitants' lifestyles. By minimizing decoration and focusing on the essence of the space, the villa has been reborn as a sanctuary of tranquility and elegance. The design's intrinsic order and aesthetic appeal have not only earned it the Iron A' Design Award but also established Ouyang as a visionary in the realm of residential design.

As Simplism Exploration garners acclaim, it stands as a shining example of how design can encapsulate personal narratives while pushing the boundaries of innovation. The villa, once outdated, now serves as a beacon of modern living, where every element, from the cement pillars to the natural light, contributes to a cohesive and enriching experience. Jinqiao Ouyang's work is a celebration of the beauty found in simplicity, a philosophy that will continue to inspire and shape the future of interior design.
