Guangzhou Royal Lee: A Garden Hospital Oasis

Blending Healthcare with Subtropical Garden Traditions

In the bustling city of Guangzhou, AIA Life Designers crafts a sanctuary for healing, intertwining modern healthcare with the tranquility of nature.

The Guangzhou Royal Lee Cancer Hospital stands as a testament to the innovative vision of AIA Life Designers, who have reimagined the concept of a hospital by drawing inspiration from the natural contours of the land and the rich gardening heritage of the region. This private oncology hospital transcends traditional design by integrating a "garden hospital" ethos, fostering a nurturing environment for patients through its lush courtyards, rooftop gardens, and verdant façades.

At the heart of this project lies the unique blend of architecture, interior, and landscape design, which together create a multi-dimensional green space. The hospital's design not only prioritizes patient comfort but also efficiency, ensuring that every element contributes to a holistic healing experience. The use of natural materials like stone, glass, and wood, alongside the strategic placement of greenery, offers a professional yet inviting atmosphere.

Technical prowess is evident in the hospital's façade, which features sunshade window frames tailored to Guangzhou's subtropical climate. The robust gray-green stone of the podium echoes the forms of mountains, grounding the facility in its cultural and geographical context. With a construction area of 75,000 square meters and 200 beds in its initial phase, the hospital is a beacon of comprehensive healthcare design.

AIA Life Designers' approach extends beyond aesthetics, incorporating eco-design principles that address the regional climate and topography. The hospital's layout is meticulously planned to ensure efficient healthcare flow, while the integration of the first and second phases of construction provides flexibility for future expansion. The interior design draws from nature, offering patients a serene environment to recuperate.

The design team, led by Hai Yang and Simon Tsouderos, has overcome significant challenges, including the site's varying elevation and the need to create comfortable spaces in a humid climate. Their success in these areas is a testament to their dedication to research and understanding of local conditions. The result is a facility that operates seamlessly, with patients healing in nature and doctors working in a garden-like setting.

Since its completion in 2021, the Guangzhou Royal Lee Cancer Hospital has not only served as a high-end medical facility but also as a symbol of design excellence, earning a Silver A' Design Award. The project's success is a reflection of AIA Life Designers' commitment to creating spaces that promote well-being and harmony with the environment.
