The Wuhan Pixel Box Cinema is not just a place to watch movies; it's a celebration of the art of film itself. The design is inspired by the concept of pixels, the basic elements of images. By exploring the relationship between movement and pixels, Law has created a space that allows audiences to immerse themselves in the world of film. The entrance, concession counter, and leisure area are built up by boxes of different heights, serving various functions while drawing people into the cinematic experience.
The feature display wall, decorated with a multitude of square strips protruding from the wall, presents the cinema's brand name, "PIXEL BOX". These strips form seating and tables, creating a relaxing area for customers. The bookshop area, using the same theme, showcases a class of magnificence, with every surface of the boxes used to display books.
The box office grand hall is a marvel of design, housing a curved envelope formed by over 6000 pieces of stainless steel panels. The reflection of lights enhances the infinite atmosphere and sense of space inside the area. In the center of the hall, marble seats of various lengths serve as a resting and waiting area, reminiscent of playing Tetris.
The Children’s Auditorium is another highlight, with a sense of harmony created by the pixel theme. Covered by a carpet in square pattern enriched with olive green and grey colors, the whole area is filled with unlimited vitality. The lavatory, with each toilet cubicle designed with distinctive height and facilitated by the reflective characteristics of mirror, offers users a humorous and mysterious maze-like experience.
Despite the challenges of avoiding clichés with the pixel theme and ensuring the structural safety of the grand hall's curved envelope, Law has managed to create a design that is both innovative and functional. The Wuhan Pixel Box Cinema is a testament to the power of design and its ability to transform everyday experiences. It's no wonder that this design was awarded Platinum in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2012, recognizing its world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative design.
