The Humming Bird salad dressing set is designed to be a highly decorative table feature. The oil and vinegar are dispensed using bird-shaped pipettes, which operate in the same way as scientific instruments, drawing up accurate amounts of liquid for a more precise and delicate application.
The base section and stand of the set are made of stainless steel, while the containers and pipettes are crafted from blown glass bulbs. Clear polycarbonate hangers are attached to the bulbs with epoxy resin, and the pipettes feature injection-molded colored silicone body pods.
With an overall size of 200mm x 200mm x 300mm, the glass bulb containers can hold 200ml of oil or vinegar. The set is secured in a printed carton board box with recyclable packaging for easy storage and transportation.
The Humming Bird salad dressing set is not only visually interesting but also functional. Its construction utilizes existing technologies and high-quality materials, making it pleasing to handle. The design deliberately references the natural world and employs unexpected methodology from the science lab to collect and dispense the liquid.
The development of the design involved extensive research, including the use of models to test ergonomics, anthropometrics, and the optimum size for the bulb containers and pipettes. The main challenges in this project were to create a visually unique design that was easy to handle and operate, while efficiently dispensing the liquids with no residual mess.
The Humming Bird salad dressing set is a winner of the prestigious A' Design Award in 2013. This award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The set's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
