The Ring: A Sanctuary of Art and Design

Marwan Zgheib's Award-Winning Cocoon for a Jewelry Artist

Marwan Zgheib, an acclaimed architect, has designed a private living and working space, The Ring, for a young Saudi jewellery artist. This house-atelier, situated in the garden of her family’s main residence, is a unique blend of architecture and artistry.

The Ring's design is a testament to Zgheib's innovative approach. The structure comprises a cylindrical volume that embraces a rectangular one. The cylinder acts as a protective closed wall with a single narrow opening serving as the entrance. The rectangle fluidly accommodates all the house functions necessary for the everyday life of the artist: a bedroom, a bathroom, a living room, a kitchen, and an atelier. This interior space interacts smoothly with the serene outdoor atrium, a large terrace garden with a symbolic tree and a circular water feature.

The design's unique properties lie in its resemblance to a cocoon, ensuring a sense of intimacy and calmness. This protective haven is a clear expression of the artist's soul, where she can retreat and let herself grow both as an independent person and a genuine designer. The Ring offers a space where the artist can rest, receive family and friends, work freely, experiment with new jewellery materials and forms, and give birth to her creations.

The Ring was built on a 1000sqm plot with a total built-up area of 100sqm, using concrete as the primary building material. The design project, located in the city of Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, faced the challenge of creating a structure completely disconnected from its chaotic surroundings and the family house. The goal was to create a peaceful inner sanctuary isolated from the disturbances of the outside world.

Zgheib's innovative design didn't go unnoticed. The Ring was awarded Platinum in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2014. The Platinum A' Design Award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, genius, and contribute to societal wellbeing. The award is given to designs that advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, exhibiting transcendent excellence and making the world a better place.

In conclusion, The Ring is a testament to Zgheib's innovative architectural prowess and a beacon of design inspiration. It showcases how design and architecture can create a sanctuary that not only serves functional needs but also fosters creativity and personal growth. The Ring is truly a unique blend of art, design, and architecture.
