Lasso: A Unique Decorative Textile

Experimentation and Serendipity

Lasso, a decorative textile designed by Cristina Orozco Cuevas, is a unique and innovative creation that combines industrial weaving techniques with handcrafted elements. Inspired by the concept of a long rope with a running noose, this fabric is the result of experimentation and serendipity.

The lasso fabric is half industrial and half crafted, designed using textile CAD software and woven in jacquard electronic looms. What sets it apart is the manual cutting process, which gives job opportunities to both machines and external workers. The fabric features vertical channels that create a fray-like effect, allowing light to pass through softly. These frays are meticulously crafted and can take months to complete. It is a testament to the designer's dedication and perseverance.

All polyester dyed yarns are woven using jacquard electronic looms, and the floated yarns are cut manually using a special tool called a knife shutter. The weave technique, although old, is applied in a way that allows for efficient production. The designer drew inspiration from traditional corduroy-making techniques to develop this unique tool.

The lasso fabric comes in two widths: 1.40 m and 2.80 m, with a repeat pattern of 35 cm width x 25 cm height. It can be used for various purposes such as lamps, pillows, bed scarfs, and decorative curtains. Ironing the loose fur brings more volume to the fabric, accentuating the frayed channels. The loose yarns are strongly moored with a special taffeta weave union, ensuring durability and longevity.

When interacting with the lasso fabric, its special appearance gives the impression of an extra application or embroidery, but in reality, it is woven that way. The soft and furry texture invites people to touch it, and when light passes through the frayed parts, it creates a unique visual effect. This textile has the potential to replace goose feathers in certain applications.

The lasso project started in March 2012 and was completed in September 2012. It was a challenging endeavor that required extensive research and experimentation. Textile engineers initially doubted the feasibility of using this technique on industrial looms, but the designer's determination and innovative approach proved them wrong. The development of the special cutting tool was a significant breakthrough, enabling faster and more efficient production.

Lasso has received recognition for its exceptional design. In 2014, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Textile, Fabric, Textures, Patterns, and Cloth Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

The lasso fabric is a true testament to the designer's talent and dedication. It is a unique and visually striking creation that pushes the boundaries of textile design, combining industrial processes with handcrafted elements. With its soft texture, frayed channels, and innovative production techniques, lasso is a true work of art that adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any space.
