note et silence. mint Kobe: A Stage for Customers

Shin Takahashi, the creative mind behind Specialnormal, was inspired by the concepts of 'Humor' and 'Playfulness' when designing note et silence. mint Kobe. The shop, located in the port city of Kobe, Japan, is envisioned as a stage, with the customers as the actors and actresses, and the interior as the stage setting. This innovative approach to retail design creates a dynamic and engaging shopping experience.

The unique feature of this design is its versatility. The shop includes a movable box-shaped wall that can be repositioned to create different atmospheres within the space. When placed near the entrance, the box creates a corridor, resulting in an aggressive atmosphere. Conversely, when the box is positioned at the back, it opens up the space, creating a more relaxed environment. This flexibility allows the shop to adapt to different scenes, much like a gallery.

Technical specifications of the design include a floor area of 82.36m2, with the wall and ceiling finished in acrylic emulsion paint. The floor is made of mortar with clear paint, and the cash counter is coated in white urethane paint. The tables and other elements are made of oak with urethane clear paint and brass aging paint. These materials contribute to the overall aesthetic of the shop, enhancing its stage-like atmosphere.

The design was completed within a month, from August to September 2012, in Kobe, Japan. Shin Takahashi was the sole member of the design team, showcasing his ability to conceptualize and execute innovative design ideas. His design philosophy is evident in the note et silence. mint Kobe shop, where humor and playfulness are key elements in defining the space.

This innovative design has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2014.
