The Dicecal, designed by Andrea Kis, is a truly unique and innovative creation that combines the functionality of a calendar with the versatility of gaming dice. Inspired by the need for a creative design during a preuniversity project in December 2013, Kis set out to create a calendar that would not only be practical but also serve as a stylish office supply or home decor.
What sets the Dicecal apart from other calendars is its 3D design and its incorporation of role-playing game elements. Each of the twelve sides of the Dicecal represents a month of the year and features graphics of different playing dice. These dice-images are carefully designed to ensure maximum potential probability, with numbers randomized in a way that reflects the characteristics of each type of dice. For example, a two-sided die contains both 1 and 2, each appearing six times.
The design of the dice images, the number-randomization, and the typography of the calendar have all been uniquely created by Kis for this project. The calendar is made using origami techniques with paper weighing between 120-320 g/m2. Kis starts by hand-drawing rough sketches, which are then digitized and vectorized using Corel Draw. The calendar is created using the PF Handbook Pro font, and the stylized die design is applied. The template is then cut, folded, and glued by hand, with each die taking approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.
The Dicecal comes in two sizes: the first and main design is about 8 centimeters tall with edge lengths of 32 mm, while a larger variation measures 13 centimeters in height and width with edge lengths of 46 mm. The calendar is available in two color variations: black with white letters and the inverse. Despite its intricate design, the Dicecal is made of paper and is therefore lightweight.
Functionally, the Dicecal serves as a desk calendar, displaying the months of the year and the weeks and days of each month. However, it goes beyond that by offering the ability to roll the dice and use them for various gaming purposes. Each side of the Dicecal features multiple numbers, in addition to those used in the calendar, allowing for random results similar to using traditional role-playing dice.
The Dicecal project started in December 2013 and was completed in May 2014. It was tested at a small gaming convention in Debrecen, Hungary in September 2014, and has since undergone some modifications. Kis continues to work on additional color and paper variations for the design.
The Dicecal has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The Dicecal's unique combination of functionality, creativity, and visual appeal has made it a standout design in the industry.
With the Dicecal, Andrea Kis has created a truly remarkable and versatile piece that seamlessly combines the worlds of art, design, and gaming. Its innovative design and multifunctionality make it a must-have for anyone who appreciates both style and practicality.
