Quietness: A Residence Designed by Shin-Yuan Fang

Creating Harmony Through Space and Materials

The dialogue among the shadow, materials, and saturation brings nature back to life, as explained by Shin-Yuan Fang, the designer behind the Quietness residence.

The Quietness residence, designed by Shin-Yuan Fang, is a unique and harmonious living space that embodies the concept of tranquility. The design is characterized by the use of the 1/3 and 2/3 concept, dividing the space into public and private areas. The loft, a signature element of the design, is seamlessly integrated into the overall structure.

The color palette of grey and white shades, based on the 1/3 concept, creates a serene and calming atmosphere throughout the residence. The use of virgin materials adds depth and texture to the space, while the primitive simplicity of cement forms a striking contrast with the subtle elements present.

One of the key strengths of the Quietness residence is its ability to create a sense of connection between different spaces. With the entire space divided into a 1/3 and 2/3 ratio, each area flows seamlessly into the next, creating a cohesive and harmonious living environment.

The realization of the Quietness residence involved the use of various materials, including Pandomo, wood, marble, iron, black brick, and cement. These materials were carefully selected to enhance the overall aesthetic and contribute to the sense of calmness and elegance that defines the design.

Located in Shanghai, China, the Quietness residence project began in November 2013 and was completed in July 2014. Throughout the design process, Shin-Yuan Fang conducted extensive research on symmetry and proportion, aiming to create a structural aesthetic that combines buildings and cities with literature and life. The result is a design that evokes a rational consciousness through its metaphorical textures.

The Quietness residence presented several challenges for the designer. Shin-Yuan Fang aimed to create a space that would provide a sense of quietness for a dweller who frequently travels alone overseas. The design successfully overcame this challenge by prioritizing tranquility and incorporating elements that promote a peaceful atmosphere.

The Quietness residence, designed by Shin-Yuan Fang, is a testament to the power of thoughtful design in creating a harmonious and serene living space. Its unique use of the 1/3 and 2/3 concept, combined with the careful selection of materials, sets it apart from other residential designs. This exceptional design was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2015, highlighting its outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
