Black DNA: A Masterpiece of Residential Design

Shin-Yuan Fang's Award-Winning Design Transforms Space into Art

Shin-Yuan Fang's Black DNA, a residential house design, is a stunning blend of form and function. Inspired by the art of paper folding, this design utilizes a single color tone and multiple materials to create a space that is both extraordinary and full of vitality.

Black DNA, a project that started in April 2012 in Taipei, Taiwan, and finished in December 2013, is a testament to Shin-Yuan Fang's innovative approach to design. The 10th floor of the house serves as a public area while the 11th floor is reserved for private space. These two distinct areas are seamlessly connected through the use of origami-inspired design elements.

Despite the uniform color palette, the space is far from monotonous. The designer's clever use of textures and materials, including marble, wood, Pandomo, iron, stainless steel, paint, and glass, results in a visually engaging and unexpected environment. The design is reminiscent of DNA, where the same elements can yield vastly different results through various permutations and combinations.

The project was not without its challenges. As the house is located within a mansion, there were significant restrictions regarding construction. However, Shin-Yuan Fang managed to overcome these obstacles, even installing a fireplace to provide warmth and a comforting ambiance to the space.

The design's unique properties and the designer's ability to overcome challenges did not go unnoticed. Black DNA was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2015, a prestigious accolade granted to designs that reflect extraordinary excellence and significantly impact the world with their desirable characteristics.

Shin-Yuan Fang's Black DNA is a testament to the power of innovative design. It's a space that not only meets the basic demands of the client but also transforms the 360 square meter area into a work of art. The design is a perfect example of how a single color tone, when combined with different textures and materials, can create a space that is luxurious, structured, and full of vitality.
