Cabinets of Curiosities: A Fresh and Calm Seaside Apartment in Hong Kong

Residential apartment transformed into a light-filled open space

The brief was to create a fresh and calm space that feels natural as a seaside apartment for a Belgian-Chinese couple.

Bean Buro, led by designers Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui, has successfully transformed a dark corridor layout into a light-filled open space in the Cabinets of Curiosities project. Located in Cape Mansions Pok Fu Lam, Hong Kong, this residential apartment of approximately 2,000sqft showcases the designers' creativity and attention to detail.

The highlight of the design is a set of full-height timber panels with a delicate pattern of display niches that extends from the entrance deep into the rear of the open kitchen. This continuous backdrop seamlessly links the foyer lounge, dining area, and kitchen together. Behind these timber panels, a system of high-density storage conceals shoe racks, kitchenware, equipment, and even a walk-in wardrobe for outdoor sports gear and bicycles.

What sets this design apart is the careful attention to detail. The full-height timber panels are designed with intricate shadow gaps, creating a playful pattern that adds visual interest to the space. Additionally, a timber bookcase folds into the circulation way, transforming into a work study and eliminating the previous corridor effect.

The interaction within the space is also carefully considered. The bookcase serves as a curated display of decorations and concealed storage. Full-height mirrors are strategically placed at windows and wall junctions, extending the panoramic view of the ocean and maximizing natural daylight throughout the apartment. Roller blinds can be controlled electronically, and scene lighting control allows for a range of atmospheres throughout the day, corresponding to the changing colors of the horizon.

The Cabinets of Curiosities project started in April 2015 and was completed in December 2015. The design team, which included Design Directors Lorène Faure and Kenny Kinugasa-Tsui, as well as Architectural Assistants Katherine Leung and Michelle Ho, overcame challenges to create flexible zoning and maximize natural daylight in the space. The result is a fresh and calm seaside apartment that seamlessly blends functionality and aesthetics.

Bean Buro's Cabinets of Curiosities project has been recognized for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2017. This prestigious award acknowledges the design's creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to quality of life improvements.
