Infinity: Reflective Headstone Design

Designing a Symbolic Connection to the Afterlife

Infinity is a minimalistic design by Soroush Vahidian Kamyar that aims to create a symbolic connection between the physical world and the afterlife. By incorporating a mirror into the headstone, the design reflects the sky, reminding viewers of the eternal nature of the human spirit.

The concept behind Infinity was inspired by the belief in the Ascension of Christ to heaven after his crucifixion. The reflective cross mirror on the headstone represents the place where Jesus Christ ascended, reflecting the sky and creating a visual link between the physical world and the realm beyond.

One of the unique properties of Infinity is its ability to address the interaction between people and gravestones, a topic often overlooked. By redirecting the viewer's gaze towards the sky, the design serves as a reminder of the afterlife and the dynamic nature of the human soul. This reminder helps individuals feel less sorrow for their departed loved ones, as they are reminded that their souls are not confined to the ground.

To achieve a greater contrast, the headstone is made of concrete, with a 1mm thick reflective steel mirror set into its surface. The dimensions of the design are 750mm x 1650mm x 120mm, providing a visually striking and thought-provoking presence in any cemetery.

The interaction with Infinity occurs when individuals look at the headstone. Instead of seeing a simple marker, they are greeted with a reflection of the sky, complete with moving clouds. This representation of the infinite sky serves as a reminder of the dynamic state of the soul after death, helping to alleviate fear and instill a sense of peace.

The concept and design process for Infinity took four days, from February 16th to February 19th, 2015. The underlying research for this design was driven by the observation of the pity people often feel when visiting cemeteries. Despite their belief in an afterlife, this momentary feeling of sorrow is a common occurrence. Infinity seeks to address this by providing a visual reminder of the eternal nature of the human spirit.

Infinity was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The design is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.
