The inspiration for RAW Restaurant's design came from a desire to create a space that defied the typical divisions found in restaurants. The design team at WEIJENBERG Pte Ltd wanted to craft a space that served as a sanctuary from Taipei's bustling streets, using natural materials and soft finishes to evoke a sense of tranquility. The result is a continuous wooden structure that runs throughout the restaurant, creating a seamless and elegant space.
The unique feature of RAW Restaurant's design is its central wooden structure. Built by a boat builders company in southern Taiwan, the structure is a testament to the team's commitment to using local craftsmanship and techniques. The structure's complex geometry was achieved using computer technology to pre-cut the wood, resulting in a construction process that was as intricate as it was challenging.
The restaurant's design also takes diners on a journey. As guests step into the restaurant, they are greeted by a wooden path that leads them away from the city's hustle and bustle and into a tranquil lounge area. The main dining area is surrounded by the wooden structure, creating an intimate and peaceful haven where the food takes center stage.
The design of RAW Restaurant was not without its challenges. The main hurdle was the construction of the wooden structure. The team had to find a contractor who could handle the project's complexity and understand the delicate nature of the structure. The solution was found in a contractor in southern Taiwan who had experience dealing with complex geometries as a boat builder.
RAW Restaurant's design has been recognized for its innovation and excellence. It was awarded Platinum in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2015. The award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing and push the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
In conclusion, RAW Restaurant is a testament to WEIJENBERG Pte Ltd's commitment to blending tradition and modernity. The design team's innovative use of local craftsmanship and modern technology has resulted in a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also provides a unique dining experience. The restaurant's design tells a parallel tale about how food can be experienced, serving as a sanctuary from the hectic Taipei scene.
