Residence Guan: A Harmonious Blend of Art and Architecture

Rui Zhao's Award-Winning Design Transforms Private Hotel Space into a Masterpiece

The project was initially an unfinished building, which presented Zhao and his team with the challenge of completing its construction and structural transformation. The design team built a large platform to shield the building from the sun, integrating it seamlessly with the environment and fostering a better interaction between people and nature. This platform also serves as a versatile space for large events such as barbecues, cocktail parties, or weddings, enhancing the site's usability.

Inside, the structure is exposed as much as possible to showcase the height of the space, creating a beautiful sense of rhythm. Zhao's design philosophy for this project was to ensure that every corner was filled with scenery, light, mood, and life. This ambition led to the inclusion of various elements such as sculptures, paintings, installations, and lamps, even straw houses and streams, all contributing to the project's unique character.

Given the harsh local climate of Sanya, the choice of materials was crucial to the project's quality. The building is located by the sea, subject to strong sea breezes, high salt water, and strong corrosion. To combat these challenges, Zhao chose Shandong white rust stone, logs, and texture paint for their high durability.

The project, which spans 7300 square meters, was completed in April 2016. Zhao's design team included Longjun Li, Fangyuan Liu, Zhenghui Ye, Jun Liu, Zhibin Huang, Hequan Zhang, Qiong Luo, Qidiao Wu, Danran Chen, Donglin Wu, Zaixi Wu, Shengjuan Li, Bin Lv, Ruqian Lang, Weize Kang, Zhiyi Yang, Zhibin Zang, Huanjie Zhan, Xiaoling Gao, and Xiaoli Luo. The space was photographed by Heng Zhang and Qidiao Wu.
