AT WILL: A Hotel-Like Home Combining the Rough and the Delicate

A Unique Residential House Design by TING-LIANG CHEN and SHIH-JIE LIN

Located in central Taipei, AT WILL is an 8th floor apartment that offers a broad window view and ample natural illumination. The designers took advantage of these environmental conditions to create a house where even the bathroom allows residents to enjoy the stunning city skyline. This blank canvas provided the inspiration for the designers to combine the beauty of primitive elements with the delicateness of artificial design. The central idea behind AT WILL is to create a "hotel-like home" that provides a luxurious and comfortable living experience.

AT WILL stands out from other residential designs with its unique combination of rough and delicate elements. The designers chose to preserve the original cement ceiling, which became the starting point for the entire project. The focus was on creating a sense of commonality throughout the space. The position of the kitchen island was strategically placed to increase interactions between people in the house. Behind the kitchen island, a customized trellis glass case displays a collection of Lego toys, adding a playful touch to the design. The concept of the sofa arrangement is similar to that of Lego, allowing users to piece together each sofa at will, creating a flexible and customizable seating area.

The realization of AT WILL involved the use of various materials, including veneer, spray paint, glass, iron pieces, marble, cement finish, solid flooring, and imported tiles. The result is a harmonious blend of textures and finishes that enhance the overall aesthetic of the space. With an acreage of 192 square meters, AT WILL offers ample room for residents to live and relax.

The traffic flow within a residential house is crucial, especially in a crowded city like Taipei. In AT WILL, the spatial arrangement and traffic flow revolve around the living room. The round-shape traffic flow allows users to move easily throughout the space. The designers also focused on the cement material and the surface of the wall, using the same hue of gray to extend the visual feeling of the original cement ceiling, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing environment.

The AT WILL project started in February 2014 and was completed in September 2014 in central Taipei. Throughout the design process, the designers faced minimal obstacles, allowing for a smooth renovation of the house. The result is a unique and luxurious residential space that combines the roughness of primitive elements with the delicateness of modern design.

AT WILL was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2015. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. AT WILL showcases strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
