Matchsticks Forest: A Poster Series with a Powerful Message

A Unique Design Concept that Raises Awareness about Deforestation

Matchsticks Forest is a thought-provoking poster series created by designer Wesam Mazhar Haddad. Inspired by the rapid development and deforestation in Jordan, Haddad aims to shed light on the destructive impact of human activities on the environment.

The concept behind Matchsticks Forest is simple yet impactful. Each poster depicts a forest made entirely of matchsticks, symbolizing the parallel equation between deforestation and the consumption of matchsticks. Haddad's intention is to highlight the alarming rate at which forests are being destroyed and the consequences it has on our planet.

What sets Matchsticks Forest apart is its unique approach to design. Haddad utilizes leftover matchsticks, which are often considered worthless, as the main medium for creating these visually striking posters. The artist believes in the power of creativity to transform something seemingly insignificant into a work of art. Each matchstick in the composition represents a unique character, resembling the shape of a living being, reminding us of the trees they once were.

The posters are realized using digital prints on Art Matte Paper with Matte Lamination. Depending on the exhibition space, they are either hung from the ceiling to create a stronger presence or placed on walls as separate or continuous series. In outdoor exhibitions, they are exhibited on wooden or aluminum stands close to trees and green areas, emphasizing the contrasting impact of deforestation on viewers.

Matchsticks Forest has received international recognition and acclaim. The series was awarded the Gold Prize in The 5th International Competition NAGOYA DESIGN DO! 2006 in Japan, under the theme "For Someone Else-Communication and Collaboration." The posters have been exhibited and published globally, from Hong Kong and Slovakia to Mexico, the UK, and the USA.

These thought-provoking posters have a universal appeal, transcending education, knowledge, and background. They have been exhibited and awarded worldwide, including being a selected exhibitor at The FL3TCH3R Exhibit in Tennessee, USA, and receiving the Gold Award in the Graphis Social & Political Protest Posters competition in New York, USA.

Creating a composition out of matchsticks presented its own set of challenges. Fragility and sensitivity were major concerns, and it took several weeks to build the entire composition. Thousands of matchsticks were used, and any unintended movement could ruin days of work. Haddad personally experienced the smell of sulfur during the process, giving him a glimpse of the devastation caused by forest fires.

Matchsticks Forest is a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving our forests and the devastating consequences of deforestation. Wesam Mazhar Haddad's innovative use of matchsticks as a medium and his thought-provoking design have earned him the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2016, recognizing his outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
