Emotional Object #022: Gift wrap

When the idea for Gift wrap was conceived, there was a concern that a similar design already existed. However, after thorough research, it was discovered that this design was truly unique. The elegant appearance of the table proved to be challenging to create, as it required precision and skill from both the designers and craftsmen involved in its production. Despite its simplicity, Gift wrap is a coffee table with many remarkable qualities.

The realization of Gift wrap involved several simulations and experimentation. Initially, the plan was to cut and weld multiple pieces of steel to create a continuous strip. However, this method proved to be time-consuming and labor-intensive. As a result, the designers opted for bending a single strip of metal, carefully calculating the thickness to ensure the table's stability. The hard work and dedication put into this design are evident in its clean and minimalist form.

The specifications of Gift wrap include options for veneered MDF or super clear glass, paired with a brushed or polished stainless steel structure. The physical dimensions of the table are 1000 x 1000 x 300 mm, and it is delivered fully assembled in a wooden crate. The weight varies depending on the material used, with the wood version weighing 55 kg and the glass version weighing 65 kg.

Gift wrap is more than just a coffee table; it is an object that invites interaction. Its purpose is to be used and enjoyed, rather than simply admired. The designers describe it as a simple object that invites users to unpack it and put their feet on it, challenging them to fully experience its functionality.

This unique design was born in March 2015 in Porto, Portugal. After five prototypes, the final variations of the table were completed in January 2016 and presented at Maison et Objet in Paris. Extensive research was conducted to ensure the proportions, angles, and weight of the table were perfectly balanced, resulting in a design that appears effortless and light.

The creation of Gift wrap presented various challenges, both creative and technical. The goal was to make something complex appear simple, which required meticulous attention to detail. The assembly process involved welding and polishing the metal with the final piece already in place, while the second movement required hidden fixtures to be bolted inside the wooden structure. These challenges were overcome through innovative problem-solving and a commitment to achieving the desired design.

Gift wrap is a testament to the power of simplicity in design. Inspired by a box of chocolates, this coffee table combines clean lines, bold statements, and a touch of elegance. It is a piece that adds character and sophistication to any living space.
