Offshore House - A Moving Space

Residential Design by Fang Shin-Yuan

Migration has been a part of human history since ancient times, and it is also a current activity. The users of this project usually live overseas, traveling among different countries. Design planners have to apply a linear movement method based on the characteristics of the space to allow planar elements to produce many possibilities through displacement. Doesn’t it mean that humans can escape their lifestyle in the fixed space?

The Offshore House, designed by Fang Shin-Yuan, is a unique residential space that challenges the traditional notions of fixed living. Inspired by the concept of migration and the need for flexibility in today's globalized world, this design offers a moving space that can adapt to the changing needs of its users.

One of the key features of the Offshore House is the use of point, line, and plane elements to create a dynamic and versatile environment. Moving lines and opening and closing planes allow for various spatial configurations, blurring the boundaries between different areas of the house. This design approach not only provides flexibility but also adds a sense of intrigue and playfulness to the space.

In order to integrate the entire place and create a harmonious atmosphere, the saturation and brightness of the materials used in the Offshore House are intentionally lowered. This minimalist approach allows the design to shine through and emphasizes the movement and transformation of the space.

From a technical standpoint, the Offshore House incorporates innovative materials and construction techniques. The use of recycled and reused old wood materials not only adds character to the space but also addresses environmental concerns. These materials, despite their age, provide natural stability and ensure the longevity of the house.

Another noteworthy technology used in the Offshore House is the application of Gaia soil, a special cement made from silt sediment at the bottom of a reservoir. This material not only has the ability to adjust humidity in the atmosphere but also gives waste materials a new purpose. By incorporating sustainable and eco-friendly materials, the Offshore House showcases the potential for responsible design practices.

Located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the Offshore House was completed in December 2013 after months of meticulous planning and construction. Its multi-dimensional design and adaptability make it suitable for various lifestyles and user profiles. Whether it's a whole family or just one or two members, the space can be transformed to meet their specific needs.

The Offshore House challenges the conventional notions of fixed living spaces and offers a new perspective on how we can escape the limitations of our lifestyle. With its innovative design, use of sustainable materials, and adaptability, it sets a new standard for residential architecture.
