J-01: A Unique Retail Sneakers Shop by Joint Deco

An Unconventional Design Inspired by the Olympics

One of the standout design elements of J-01 is its eye-catching window display. By blocking the view at eye level through the large windows, visitors are encouraged to spend more time in the shop. This design choice also creates intrigue and entices people to come closer and explore the space further. The irregular shape of the shop, along with the concealed and adjustable LED light source at the diamond-cut ceiling, adds to the visual attraction and allows for flexible and diverse light reflections.

The realization of the design involved the use of tailor-made adjustable-color and dimmable LED screens on the three-dimensional irregular triangle-shaped ceiling surface. The walls were covered with conventional Shanghai plastering, and the floor was made of natural timber. The predominant color scheme of creamy white for the ceiling and walls creates a clean and inviting atmosphere.

J-01 spans an area of 131 square meters with a height of 3 meters. The project started in July 2008 and was completed in August 2008, opening to the public shortly after. The shop was located in the IFC mall in Central, Hong Kong.

The design process for J-01 involved extensive research and site visits to various multi-brand sneakers shops. The aim was to create a brand new space that would stand out from the rest. The designers also explored different ways to create a diversified ceiling and stylish window display to achieve visual attraction. The project presented challenges such as a tight schedule, accurate calculations, and delicate craftsmanship. With only 10 nights for site work in a core shopping mall, accurate drawings, thorough preparation, and good planning were essential. The irregular triangle-shaped ceiling was groundbreaking in 2008, and the technique required skilled craftsmen to bring the design to life.

J-01 has received recognition for its exceptional design. In 2016, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. J-01's design integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world.
