Zen Sushi: A Journey Into Japanese Aesthetics

Carlo Berarducci Architecture's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Kyoto's Temples

Explore the Zen Sushi restaurant, a design marvel by Carlo Berarducci Architecture, inspired by the walkways leading to Kyoto's Fushimi Inari temples. This article delves into the unique features and design process of this award-winning project.

The Zen Sushi restaurant, designed by Carlo Berarducci Architecture, is a testament to the power of design inspiration. Drawing from the walkways of the Fushimi Inari temples in Kyoto, the restaurant embodies the colors and sensations of this iconic Japanese location. The design is not simply a decor of the interior but an "architectural promenade," a journey through space marked by rhythm and repetition.

What sets Zen Sushi apart is its unique approach to space. The restaurant is designed as a succession of steps and changes of direction, each revealing a new aspect of the space. This design strategy, reminiscent of Le Corbusier's architectural promenade, invites exploration and discovery, making each visit to the restaurant a unique experience.

The realization of this design concept was achieved through a careful selection of materials and colors. The existing structure was painted black, creating a dark box within which a few key elements stand out. Red lacquered PVC ceilings, black and red timber wall coverings, black marble walls, and a backlit rice paper wall create a striking contrast, reminiscent of the matte black and glossy red-orange portals of the Fushimi Inari temples.

The restaurant's layout is designed to maximize the dining experience. With a seating capacity for 90 people, the restaurant offers a variety of seating options, each providing a pleasant view of the space and the people around. The design also includes a kaiten sushi bar, a dynamic element that adds to the overall experience of the space.

Despite the design challenges, Carlo Berarducci Architecture was able to create a contemporary space that captures the essence of Japanese aesthetics. The project's success is reflected in its accolades, including the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2016, a testament to the design's innovation and excellence.

In conclusion, Zen Sushi is more than just a restaurant. It is a journey into Japanese aesthetics, a space that invites exploration and discovery, and a testament to the power of design inspiration. Carlo Berarducci Architecture's innovative approach to design has resulted in a space that is not only visually stunning but also offers a unique dining experience.
