Mannerism: A Fashion Revolution by Doyi Park

Artistic and Wearable Womenswear Inspired by European Mannerism Art

Doyi Park's inspiration for this collection stems from the Mannerism art movement that emerged after the Italian High Renaissance. This movement is known for its modification of classic artwork through individual perspectives, demonstrating, exaggerating, and transforming intentional disharmony. Park has used this concept to redefine the classic shirt, a staple that exemplifies formality and wearability, regardless of gender and age.

The unique properties of this collection lie in its artistic yet wearable garments. Park has explored various shirt silhouettes and implemented them into the construction and prints of the garments. The use of collages has further helped in understanding and formulating new garment structures within Mannerism art.

The collection was realized through machine sewing, hand finishing, hand sewing, and machine embroidery. Materials such as wool, cotton, silk chiffon, silk lining, and faux fur were used to create the garments. To support the structured silhouette of the collection, numerous fusible materials were used to make the fabric stiff and strong.

The project, which started in September 2015 in New York, was completed in May 2016. The research for this collection involved understanding Mannerism art and applying its definition to fashion. The shirt was considered as the symbolic representation of Mannerism fashion, leading to several explorations using classic shirts to create the collection.

The collection faced several challenges, especially in creating structured garments. Finding stiff and strong fabrics to create the desired silhouettes was a challenge. To overcome this, several paper works were done to properly formulate the desired silhouettes. Despite these challenges, the collection was completed successfully, reflecting the artistic approach of a Mannerism artist.

The collection was awarded the Golden A' Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
