Musubi: Head Jewelry Inspired by Japanese Tradition

Connecting People Through Mizuhiki Knots

This head jewelry, named Musubi, is a unique creation that combines traditional Japanese techniques with modern design elements. Inspired by the intricate decorations found on wedding cakes and beautiful decorative cakes, designer Asuka Saito sought to incorporate the art of Mizuhiki, a traditional Japanese knotting technique, into a wearable piece of jewelry.

Mizuhiki is a form of ornamental Japanese paper cord that is typically used to create ornate knots to decorate packages and notes. However, Saito took this traditional technique a step further by using Mizuhiki as a jewelry element, combined with Swarovski crystals. The result is a stunning headpiece that seamlessly blends tradition with contemporary design.

The Musubi head jewelry is meticulously crafted by arranging Tsumami zaiku and Mizuhiki zaiku techniques, along with Swarovski crystals. Tsumami zaiku is the art of folding and shaping fabric into intricate designs, while Mizuhiki zaiku involves the creation of decorative knots using Mizuhiki cord. The combination of these techniques, along with the sparkling Swarovski crystals, creates a truly unique and eye-catching piece.

The Musubi head jewelry features a brim with a diameter of 5.25 inches, a crown measuring 3 inches in diameter and 2.25 inches in height, and a center flower with a diameter of 3 inches. The Mizuhiki cord extends to a length of 8.5 inches, adding an elegant touch to the overall design.

Mizuhiki knots hold great significance in Japanese culture, symbolizing affection, warmth, and togetherness. The inspiration behind Musubi comes from the idea that tying a Mizuhiki knot connects people and brings them together. This head jewelry serves as a beautiful representation of this concept, allowing wearers to express their connection to others through a stunning piece of art.

The Musubi head jewelry project began in July 2016 and was completed in September 2016 in the United States. Asuka Saito's meticulous research and dedication to incorporating traditional techniques into modern design resulted in a truly remarkable piece of jewelry.
