NUi X-hale: A Revolution in Woodwork Design

Introducing a Groundbreaking Modular Assembly System for Wood

NUi X-hale, a novel bookshelf design, is redefining the boundaries of woodwork through an innovative modular assembly system. This design, a winner of the prestigious Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, is a testament to the potential of wood as a creative medium, offering a more practical and interactive user experience. The design is environmentally conscious, aiming for optimal wood use and reducing the volumes and dimensions required for woodworking.

The NUi X-hale bookshelf is a unique design that stands out due to its innovative assembly system. This system, comprised of polymer connectors, allows for diverse structural, dimensional, and spatial configurations. The connectors provide unparalleled integrity to load-bearing wood designs that would not be feasible through traditional means. Furthermore, the system allows for easy assembly and disassembly, enabling reusability and seamless reconfigurations to suit ever-changing design needs and preferences.

The design process utilized in-house 3D design, 3D printing, and CNC capabilities for concept validation, iterative prototyping, and precision cutting. The team of engineers, architects, and expert craftsmen were instrumental in making the technology work in harmony to achieve and surpass the set metrics and expectations. The bookshelf, with dimensions of 400 mm x 980 mm x 2,700 mm, is made from Ipe wood, known for its durability and beauty.

The polymer connectors are permanently affixed to the wood elements, making the assembly process intuitive and simple. The design can be completely disassembled and flat-packed, and each connection can be swiftly locked and unlocked through a locking pin. The X-Hale bookshelf has a weight-bearing capacity of 180 kg, a testament to the structural integrity of the design.

The project was carried out at the NUi facility in Managua, Nicaragua, from March to October 2016. The design was informed by extensive user feedback and research, which revealed a disconnect between the user experience and the practicality of most wood products. The NUi X-hale bookshelf addresses this disconnect by offering a user-friendly, reliable, and efficient assembly system that maximizes the structural performance of each connection.

The design faced challenges related to the inherent limitations of wood as a raw material. However, the NUi team overcame these challenges by developing a wood-specific interconnection system that facilitates assembly, enables disassembly, and improves the structural profile and performance of the design. The system also minimizes wood requirements, making it a sustainable choice for woodwork design.
