Weiming No.8: A Unique Logo Design for Literati Style Tea

Integrating Cultural Connotations into Tea Packaging

Inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Peking University, designer Chao Zhao created the Weiming No.8 logo to express admiration for the alma mater and its scholars. This distinctive logo design incorporates elements such as books, tea stumps, and ink droplets, perfectly integrating them with Weiming No.8 to convey the cultural connotations of this literati style tea.

Traditionally, tea logos often feature elements like tea leaves, teapots, and water. However, the Weiming No.8 logo takes a different approach by incorporating elements of humanities, such as books and ink. This design aligns with the customer's unique vision for a literati tea.

One of the standout features of the Weiming No.8 logo is its extension. The logo design seamlessly integrates an open book with the morphology of a tea mountain, creating a visually striking representation of the tea's artistic conception. This graphic is applied to the labels and packaging, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal.

The realization of this design involves the use of wood for the packaging, with the logo and key information printed on specialized cotton paper and attached to the front of the package. The handbag is made of yellow kraft paper with spot color printing for additional information.

The Weiming No.8 logo derives its uniqueness from the integration of elements such as books, tea stumps, and ink droplets, perfectly expressing the cultural connotations of this literati style tea. The design process began in June 2016 in Shenzhen and underwent several iterations before being finalized in August 2016.

The designer conducted thorough research to understand the background and objectives of the project. With the customer's inclination to express admiration for Peking University and its scholars, the designer chose to name the tea after Weiming Lake, a place with profound humanistic connotations. Key points of the project were identified and communicated with the customer to develop a preliminary design plan that effectively conveyed the desired cultural connotations.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was selecting tea-related elements that not only represented the product but also reflected the unique cultural connotations of this literati style tea.

The Weiming No.8 logo, created by Chao Zhao, was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2017 in the category of Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
