House for Beth: A Homage to Vernacular Architecture

David Salmela's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Door County's Farmsteads

Door County, a peninsula known for its breathtaking views, limestone cliffs, and agricultural fields, has seen a decrease in the number of farmsteads over time. However, the remaining pine-sided barns have left a lasting impression on the landscape and the people who live there. Beth, the homeowner, is one of those people. Her vision for a home that embraces the open farm field landscape of the area is brought to life in 'House for Beth'.

The house stands out for its steep pitched steel roof, cedar siding left to age naturally, a lean-to in the rear, and a composition of square windows. The white trim surrounding the windows, along with the white fences, complement the natural aging materials. The base of the exterior is clad in a black paper and resin, maintenance-free Richlite material to protect the longevity of the cedar siding.

The building's orientation is east-west for optimal light gain, situated among native grasses and evergreens. White wood fences emphasize the parking area and the entry pathway leading inside. The interior finishes are simple and clean; white drywall, pine wood floors, and bright color accents. The kitchen is fresh, with white casework and stone countertops highlighted by a blue-tile backsplash.

David Salmela, the principal architect, and Malini Srivastava, the project architect, have worked together to create a design that is both unique and respectful of its surroundings. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2017, 'House for Beth' was awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.

The 'House for Beth' is more than just a building. It is a celebration of the region's architectural heritage, a reflection of the homeowner's vision, and a testament to the power of thoughtful design. It is a reminder that sometimes, the simplest designs can make the most significant impact.
