A Pine Tree: A Fusion of Nature and Architecture

Yi-Ching Wang's Award-Winning Public Space Design Inspired by Japanese Landscapes

Yi-Ching Wang, with the assistance of Tzu-Cheng Cho, embarked on this project with the core idea of creating "a better life for people in the house". The design is a tribute to the most primitive life appearance, preserving and extending the surrounding landscape to provide a natural feedback. The design's unique properties lie in its natural tones, reflecting a distinct Japanese style that enriches the interior space and offers a unique external visual experience.

The realization of "A Pine Tree" involved the strategic arrangement of a "water curtain corridor", an abstract mountain wall running water image created by trapezoidal geometry lines. This design element not only enhances the visual appeal but also creates a soothing auditory experience for those entering the space. The corridor seeps cool temperature, further enhancing the overall sensory experience.

The design spans an area of 379.5 square meters and was completed in May 2016 in Taiwan. Despite the challenges posed by the location, including frequent traffic and noise, Wang managed to create a quiet and serene environment. The building's front face, facing the level of the adjacent neighbors, features a grille to the cortex and several "class window" openings, ensuring privacy while offering glimpses of the outside.

The central staircase in the hall is a key element in this design, serving as a temporary pause chair for inhabitants. This unique feature, along with other elements, embodies the core spirit of the design - to create a space for settling, leaving a parting note, and traveling for pleasure. The design's success is a testament to Wang's ability to overcome creative and technical challenges to create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
