The inspiration for Al Shaqab came from the need to provide educational infrastructure for a growing area in Doha, Qatar. The design draws directly from the local vernacular architecture, aiming to bring international recognition to this traditional style. The result is a stunning building that showcases the aesthetics and function of Islamic and Qatari design.
The architectural concept of Al Shaqab revolves around a central courtyard, which serves as the heart of the school. All the facilities that the students require are located around this courtyard, creating a sense of community and connection. The design also emphasizes the distinction between public and private areas, with the ground floor and its courtyard serving as public spaces, while the upper floor houses the dormitory area.
Technologically, Al Shaqab is a marvel. The building is air-conditioned, with external perimeter walls providing thermal resistance. The symmetric recesses of the facade are made with GRC elements, and the windows are designed with insulated double glass glazing units to reduce heat transmission. The design adheres to relevant construction codes and specifications, ensuring a safe and efficient structure.
Al Shaqab is not only a school but also the headquarters for the Qatar Foundation, responsible for the expansion of the educational sector in Qatar. It serves as a center of educational excellence, contributing to the growth and development of both Qatar and the Gulf region.
The design of Al Shaqab faced its fair share of challenges. One of the greatest obstacles was the lack of records on Qatari traditional architecture. The architect had to conduct extensive research to assimilate old forms with new functions, ensuring a seamless integration of tradition and modernity.
Al Shaqab is a true architectural renaissance of the traditional Qatari identity. It celebrates the beauty and functionality of Islamic and Qatari vernacular architecture, creating a dynamic and inspiring space for education. This design has been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award, a testament to its innovative and practical qualities.
