The bar is divided into three sections, each representing a distinct era. The original pre-war condition of the building was preserved, enhanced, and reinterpreted, resulting in a space that is both intimate and playful. The speakeasy concept is further enhanced by the use of raw materials and traditional construction methods, including the use of recycled timber and natural cement. The original pre-war bricks were exposed, revealing textures that were once lost in time.
One of the unique features of PS150 is its entrance, which is disguised as a traditional toy shop. This was a solution to the challenge of creating a memorable entrance in a visually unexciting space. The entrance, coupled with the unfolding spaces and textures, creates a rich and immersive experience for guests.
The design of PS150 also reflects the local essence of Malaysia. The designers noted that while speakeasy bars were sprouting up in Kuala Lumpur, many were European or English type gentlemen bars. PS150, on the other hand, offers guests a meaningful and local experience. This is further emphasized by the bar's location in a once thriving brothel district, which echoes a sense of rich identity and positive community transformation.
The project, which started in July 2015 and was completed in December 2015, has had a significant impact on its surroundings. Before and during the project, the street night scene did not exist and the area was considered complex. Post-2016, however, the street has been cleaned up and people have started to patronize it again. New bars and charming cafes have also sprouted up since then, and PS150 has been voted many times as one of the top 10 bars with charm in Malaysia.
In conclusion, PS150 is a testament to the power of design in transforming spaces and creating unique experiences. By drawing on the building's history and incorporating local elements, Genius Loci Pte has created a space that is not only visually stunning but also deeply rooted in its context. The success of PS150 serves as an inspiration for designers and underscores the importance of considering the past, present, and future in design.
