Fling, the first truly random social media app, allows users to connect with anyone, anywhere, and share their moments. With a user base of 4.5 million in just 12 months, the founders realized the need to reinvent the app's image. The previous logo lacked character and failed to represent the app's dynamic nature.
The new logo, designed by Steve Roberts and the Fling design team, is a testament to the app's youthful energy and attitude. The custom script typeface, with its slanted text and connected letters, injects a sense of playfulness and social connection. The paper plane, a symbol synonymous with fun and freedom, represents the journey of a message on Fling.
One of the key challenges in designing the logo was creating a free-flowing script typeface that remained visually balanced and consistent. The extensive research on handwriting and script typography resulted in a unique typeface that perfectly captures the spirit of Fling.
The logo primarily features in the app's onboarding screens for both iOS and Android platforms. Its animated version, with the paper plane spelling out the letters, adds a touch of interactivity and excitement to the user experience.
The project, which took place in London from April to June 2015, aimed to position Fling as a disruptive force in the social media landscape. The logo's distinctive design and vibrant energy reflect Fling's commitment to providing users with a gateway into other people's lives.
The exceptional design of Fling's logo has been recognized with the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2018. This award celebrates designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
