The Taichung Metropolitan Theater, designed by renowned architect Toyo Ito, provided the canvas for YANG-HSIN CHEN's projection mapping masterpiece. The design was inspired by Ito's architectural principles, with points, lines, and surfaces forming the basic elements of the piece. Natural organic objects were also incorporated, resulting in a design that seamlessly combined graphics with the building's structure.
Fantastical Metamorphosis was more than just a visual spectacle. It was an event organized by the Taichung City Government to draw both local and international attention to Taichung and its unique theater. The event featured two days of stunning facade projection mapping and two months of interactive site-specific installations.
The design was realized using a combination of motion graphics, 3D animation, and editing, created with C4D, After Effects, and Final Cut. The entire video was produced in Ultra HD space and projected onto the building using 16 industrial projectors. The result was a breathtaking display of visual communication, spanning 124 M x 33 M.
The project presented several challenges, the most significant of which was creating a design that allowed the audience to interact with the building. However, the design team, which included 3D animator and motion designer YANG-HSIN CHEN and motion and editing expert Sean Lin, successfully overcame this challenge, resulting in a truly immersive experience for the audience.
The project's success was recognized with a Silver A' Movie, Video and Animation Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, strong technical characteristics, and exceptional artistic skill. Fantastical Metamorphosis certainly fits this description, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and generating positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
In conclusion, Fantastical Metamorphosis is a testament to the power of art and architecture, and the potential of projection mapping as a medium for visual communication. It is a shining example of how design can transform a building into an interactive canvas, creating a unique and memorable experience for the audience.
