Traveling at Home: A Parisian-inspired Residential Apartment

Regina Kwok's Innovative Design

The owner's love for travel and desire to recreate the ambiance of his favorite destination, Paris, is beautifully realized in this unique residential apartment designed by Regina Kwok. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Eiffel Tower, Kwok skillfully incorporates elements of lattice and illumination to create a space that evokes the spirit of travel and adventure.

Unlike typical themed interiors that rely heavily on prints and displays, Kwok takes a more abstract approach, using abstractions from the Eiffel Tower as the design vocabulary. The result is a space that captures the essence of Paris without overwhelming the apartment's spatial qualities.

The design features walls, ceilings, shelves, and even railings that meet at angles, creating a dynamic and visually striking environment. The living room showcases a feature wall and sliding door panels adhered together by lattice-like metal strips, adding a touch of elegance and sophistication.

One of the standout features of the apartment is the clever use of lighting. Recessed linear lights, arranged in a lattice-like pattern, create a dramatic effect, simulating the light beams of the Eiffel Tower. Spotlights in the living room face outward, casting a soft glow on the walls and further enhancing the melodramatic mood.

To complement the design concept, a monochromatic color scheme is employed, emphasizing the modern and chic presence of the Eiffel Tower. The use of marble finishing with swirling patterns throughout the apartment conjures up the dazzling sight of the tower at night, while reflective surfaces, such as laminated cabinet finishing in the kitchen, add a touch of sparkle.

Despite the focus on aesthetics, Kwok ensures that practicality is not compromised. Ample storage space is discreetly incorporated throughout the apartment, including a walk-in closet in the bedroom and a shoe closet at the entrance. This attention to detail allows the occupants to experience the emotional connection of travel while still enjoying the comforts of home.

Completed in October 2016 in Hong Kong, this project presented unique challenges for Kwok and her team. Limited interaction with the owner, who spends only five days per month in Hong Kong, required the use of advanced technology to convey design concepts and ensure the client's needs and preferences were met. Overcoming the low ceiling height of 2.6 meters, Kwok utilized panels of velvet and woven upholstery to create a sense of depth and visual interest in the living room and master bedroom.

Regina Kwok's innovative design for this residential apartment has garnered recognition in the design community. The project was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2018, a testament to its well-designed, practical, and innovative nature. By seamlessly blending elements of the Eiffel Tower with modern design principles, Kwok has created a space that allows the owner to travel the world without leaving the comfort of home.
