Reviving Spaces: The Interaction Residence by PartiDesign Studio

A 20-Year-Old Apartment Transformed into a Light-Filled, Interactive Living Space

The Interaction project was inspired by the limited light source and cozy space around the house. The original RC staircase was removed and replaced with an open stair with timber treads and steel structure. This alteration allowed natural sunlight to shine through the windows located upstairs, transmitting through the glass walkway and the open staircase to the bottom floor, creating a warm, enjoyable environment.

The unique properties of this design lie in the strategic arrangement of the living room sofa, kitchen, and dining area to face centrality. This change increased the available spaces, fostering better interaction between family and friends under one roof. The bottom floor was designed as a place for family bonding and entertainment, while the upstairs was reserved for personal space and rest.

The material and color coding were based on neutral textures. Warm white colored walls, tiles, stone bench top, and enamel plate formed the core design, with a pandomo cement floor to highlight the timber cabinets. Different color furniture and the owners' collection of colorful cast iron woks were used to elaborate a simple, lively, and relaxing atmosphere.

The project, completed in April 2017 in Taipei, Taiwan, involved several challenges. The original space was uncomfortable, with deterioration of material, dull color coding, and a layout that blocked natural light. The kitchen and living room were insufficiently spaced, restricting the owners' ability to prepare meals and entertain guests. The renovation successfully transformed this space into a comfortable, light-filled, and interactive environment.

The owners' feedback post-renovation was overwhelmingly positive. They noted a significant change in their house and their mood, stating that the renovation had boosted connection and relationships between family and friends. The Interaction project stands as a testament to PartiDesign Studio's innovative approach to design, earning them a Silver A' Design Award in 2018.
