Creote Studio Limited's unique approach to movie trailers involves the use of VR technology to create a 3D environment that blends seamlessly with the movie trailers. The environment features animations that synchronize with the movie trailer's content, providing an immersive experience that is unprecedented in the entertainment industry. This innovative approach takes viewer engagement to a new level, making the studio's design stand out from others.
The VR technology was adapted for mobile devices to maximize audience reach. The complex 3D models and animations were created using 3D Max and Maya, and were integrated into a game engine for programming the VR experience's controls and interactions. The animated environments were rendered as 360-degree videos, eliminating the need for real-time calculations of the complex scenes.
The project offers two modes: one for users with a Google Cardboard and another for those without. In the former, users can place their mobile devices into the Google Cardboard, immersing themselves in the designed environments. In the latter, a full-screen mode allows users to view different angles of the environment, providing a unique movie trailer viewing experience.
The project was launched in Hong Kong in November 2017 as a promotional campaign for Fox Networks Group. The campaign ran until the end of December 2017, attracting significant engagement from the South East Asia region. The project's success was underpinned by a study on immersive experience versus flat screen videos. The study involved a prototype and a focus group of 50 people aged between 25-45. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with 100% of participants reporting increased engagement with the movie trailers and 82% requesting to view the trailers again.
The main challenge faced by the design team was the limited processing power of mobile devices. To overcome this, the team rendered the complex 3D animated scenes into a 360-degree video, ensuring a smooth experience even on lower-end devices. This innovative solution allowed the team to maintain the complexity and creativity of the content without compromising the quality of the experience.
The FOX Movies VR project was awarded Silver in the A' Advertising, Marketing and Communication Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, and that introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder. The award is a testament to Creote Studio Limited's commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and design.
