The JHT Memorial Hall, located in a separate clock tower of a church, is a remarkable feat of design and architecture. Despite its limited floor area of less than 6000 square feet, the hall exudes a sense of tranquility, solemnity, and spaciousness, thanks to its white tones and oak design. These elements not only extend the sense of space visually but also create an environment-friendly and simple ambiance that enhances the affinity between people and space.
The hall's lighting design is a masterstroke. Natural light is ingeniously projected on the two-storey staircases through an outlined cross on the lobby wall, creating a serene atmosphere while also reducing electricity consumption. The cross-shaped projection is not just a design element but also carries deep meaning and artistic conception. The exhibition hall's lighting includes both daylight and nightlight modes, adding to the overall ambiance and practicality of the design.
One of the hall's unique features is the ceiling of the lobby and exhibition hall, which follows the traditional Chinese built structure. The wavy structure of the exhibition hall, simulating a flowing river, symbolizes the propagation of the China Inland Mission's history and culture. This design element effectively communicates the mission's journey from the past, through the present, and into the future.
Despite the challenges posed by the limited exhibition space, the design team cleverly utilized the corners of the staircases to create an area with rotatable display boards, enhancing the exhibition's interest and interactivity. The hall's design is a testament to the team's commitment to openness, interaction, and sharing, allowing visitors to experience the "trace of history" up close.
The JHT Memorial Hall is not just an architectural marvel but also a symbol of environmental sustainability. The majority of the materials used are wood-based and recyclable, reflecting the designer's commitment to environmental protection. The hall is also a historical testimony to the missionaries of the China Inland Mission over the past 150 years, making it a unique and significant structure in mainland China.
In conclusion, the JHT Memorial Hall is a perfect blend of tradition, innovation, and sustainability. Its unique design elements, coupled with its historical significance, make it a must-visit destination for those interested in architecture, design, and history. The hall's design is a testament to Cao Qi's creativity and ingenuity, earning it the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2019.
