Osoi Design Studio: A Multifunctional Office Space with Artistic Flair

Transforming an Old Factory into a Unique Workspace

Osoi Design Studio, created by Xuanmin Jin and Xiang Jin, is a stunning example of how an old factory building can be transformed into a multifunctional office space that seamlessly blends art, design, and functionality.

The inspiration for this project came from Xuanmin Jin's background as an interior designer and photographer. His photography work has a strong sense of decorative art, and he wanted to create a studio where he could not only work on design and photography but also exhibit and exchange art. The result is an open and versatile space that can be used for office work, art exhibitions, and creative salons.

What sets Osoi Design Studio apart is its unique use of traditional building methods. The designers utilized the concept of a patio to create layered constructions around two central patios, resulting in a space that is transparent, well-proportioned, and visually captivating. Additionally, the studio is adorned with Xuanmin Jin's own photography works, adding an artistic touch to the entire space.

The realization of this design involved the use of various materials such as paint, wood, and iron. The terrazzo stones on the surface and the ground were meticulously cut and polished by hand on-site. The integrated steel staircase was custom-made, and the partitions, lightboxes, and cabinets were all crafted by skilled carpenters.

Before the renovation, the space measured 72 square meters, but after the transformation, it expanded to an impressive 160 square meters. The project, which took place in Shanghai, started in December 2017 and was completed in February 2018.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was the layering of the space. With a total floor height of 6 meters, the designers aimed to divide the space into five levels without creating a sense of claustrophobia. Through the use of block faces, patios, split-levels, and subsurface excavations, they were able to achieve a harmonious and interconnected space. However, obtaining approval for the excavation method proved to be a challenge. After extensive communication and presenting data calculations, the designers were able to convince the park management that their approach would not have any adverse consequences.

The color palette of Osoi Design Studio revolves around black, white, and gray, creating a timeless and elegant atmosphere. The walls are adorned with wallpapers and decorative paintings, all of which are original photography works by Xuanmin Jin. These elements contribute to the overall soft decoration of the space and enhance its artistic nature.

Osoi Design Studio has received recognition for its exceptional design. In 2019, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The studio's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world were all factors in receiving this accolade.

With its unique blend of art, architecture, and functionality, Osoi Design Studio stands as a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in transforming spaces.
