Action Without Action: A Timeless Classic in Residential Design

Bass Design Inc's Award-Winning Approach to Functional, Textured Spaces

Unveiling the unique design philosophy behind Bass Design Inc's award-winning residential project, "Action Without Action", a timeless classic that marries functionality with unbounded design techniques.

At the heart of Bass Design Inc's design philosophy is a belief deeply rooted in the wisdom of Laozi: "When nothing has been done, nothing remains undone". This concept is beautifully embodied in their residential project, "Action Without Action". Rather than designing for the sake of designing, Bass Design Inc focuses on presenting space with texture, making functionality its primary feature. This approach ensures that their projects are not one-time wonders, but timeless classics.

The unique properties of this design lie in its eclectic behavior and the tranquility it exudes. Upon entering, one can immediately sense the serenity of the room. The public area uses medium-colored wood as the primary material for the finely-grained floor. The main wall, designed with a grayscale and wood grain facade storage, avoids the use of precious materials for large-area decorations. This 140 square meter space is a testament to the belief that the world would go a long way if it simply goes with the flow.

The interior uses height differences to create changes in spatial differentiation. This divides the interior into the living room, study, and dining room areas. The TV wall uses a grid display cabinet, with ink-textured marble pieces inserted into the lower portion of the wall as a highlight in variation. The dining room also features ink-textured marble pieces, with a long piece of wood slanted into the original marble to act as a table. The textures of the natural materials correspond to the variations in functions, creating roundness within the residence.

One of the design's unique features is the open bathroom inside the master bedroom, which expands the spaciousness of the room. The sliding matte-glass door provides appropriate privacy when needed. The bathroom’s interior uses a dual dressing table design to increase efficiency. The raised couch is movable with storage spaces placed on both sides to increase spatial practicality. These elements contribute to a clean and tidy appearance, enhancing the residence's texture.

The project, completed in January 2017 in Taipei City, Taiwan, faced creative challenges, particularly in integrating the ink-textured marble pieces into the design. However, Bass Design Inc's team, including Betty Chen, Chien Chung Chiu, and Ann Lin, successfully overcame these challenges, resulting in a design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

This design's excellence was recognized when it was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
