boART: A Cutting-Edge Approach to Kitchenware Design

Andrea Cingoli's Innovative Chopping Board Fuses Art and Functionality

Italian designer Andrea Cingoli takes a unique approach to kitchenware design with boART, a chopping board that combines art and functionality. Made from leftover materials, this innovative product is a testament to Cingoli's commitment to sustainability and creativity.

boART is not just a chopping board but a piece of art. Cingoli's inspiration for this project came from a desire to reuse leftover materials in a modern cubist aesthetic. The result is a product that is assembled according to a general recipe given by the designer, allowing for the creation of unique, expressive designs.

What sets boART apart from other chopping boards is its unique production process. Each board is the result of a collaboration between the designer and the worker who assembles it. This process creates a product that is always different, satisfying for the workers, and cost-effective for the company.

The base material for boART is Solid Surface, a durable, easy-to-work, antibacterial material typically used for kitchen countertops. The leftover pieces from countertop construction are cut into three different sizes and assembled with food-compatible glue. This process not only produces a top-notch product but also promotes eco-sustainability by reusing leftover materials.

boART is a multi-use combo. When hung, it serves as a decorative element, like a painting. When laid flat, it becomes an original plate or serving board, adding a creative touch to any dish. The perforation used to hang it up also serves as a perfect dose measure for spaghetti for one person.

The project, completed in Teramo in February 2015, was primarily conceptual. The aim was to fuse art, common use instruments, and evolving lifestyles. The biggest challenge was creating a system that could bind together the creative processes of the product, from the designer who creates the models and preliminary designs, to the operator who assembles the product, to the final validation by the designer or art director of the company.

boART has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Iron A' Limited Edition and Custom Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. With boART, Cingoli has certainly proven that art and functionality can coexist in everyday objects.
