Wilderness Battlefield: A Stark Illustration of Human Impact

Lara Wilkin's Award-Winning Design Sheds Light on Illegal Waste Disposal

Wilkin's inspiration for “Schlachtfeld Wildnis” stems from the growing problem of illegal waste disposal and the dangers it poses to wildlife. The series highlights the often overlooked issue of faunal living conditions and the inherited waste that threatens their habitats. The illustrations serve as a stark reminder of the clash between two worlds within one ecosystem, contaminated by human waste.

The unique properties of this design lie in its detailed vector-work illustrations, which are based on animal representative characters. The black and white theme stands out in our colorful world, encouraging viewers to take a closer look at the topic. The typography is used as an informative supplement, subordinated to the picture-objects, reinforcing the message of the illustrations. Wilkin believes that social and environmental issues leave a lasting impression through visualization, rather than exclusive typographical representation.

Produced as print illustrations, “Schlachtfeld Wildnis” was created using pencil-sketch drawings and realized with the Trackpad in Adobe Illustrator with the Pen-Tool. The project started in 2014 in Germany and presented challenges in terms of research, patience, and program capacity. Despite these hurdles, Wilkin's dedication to the cause shines through in the final product.

The illustrations are designed to engage the viewer and foster a connection through the depiction of defenseless animals. The profound subject matter is presented in a way that elicits compassion and momentum, encouraging viewers to pay attention to the issue at hand.
