It's a Tiny Little World

Celebrating Diversity Through Paper Illustrations

The inspiration behind these paper pieces is the variety of patterns, textures, and colors found in different cultures around the world. Each scene depicts the wildlife found in these nations. Having been born in a very colorful and diverse country, Nathanna Érica is fascinated by the craftsmanship of items from countries like Morocco, India, China, Peru, and the many nations of the African continent. All this made her want to try her hand at creating art that celebrates diversity. It is a tiny little world indeed.

This set of illustrations, created by Nathanna Érica, showcases the beauty and diversity of cultures around the world. Using a mixture of paper-cutting techniques and digital media, these unique pieces of art pay homage to the craftsmanship and traditions of different nations.

The illustrations were meticulously crafted using hand-painted gouache on various types and brands of paper. The vibrant colors and intricate shapes were carefully chosen to represent the rich cultural heritage of each nation. The use of mixed media, especially paper, gives the illustrations a sense of depth and dimension, creating a visually stunning 3D effect.

The process of creating these illustrations involved extensive research and sketching. Nathanna Érica studied the patterns, textures, and architectural elements of Latin, African, and Oriental cultures to accurately represent their traditions. The artwork was then meticulously cut and assembled, like a puzzle, to achieve the desired 3D effect. Once completed, the illustrations were photographed and printed.

The original artwork measures approximately 1180 mm x 250 mm, showcasing the intricate details and craftsmanship of Nathanna Érica's designs. These illustrations will be used on products of The Art of Nathanna Erica brand, including clothing and accessories, to raise awareness about the importance of celebrating diverse cultures and nations around the world.

The project was developed between July 2017 and February 2018 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Throughout the process, the main challenge was to accurately represent the traditions and symbols of each nation without resorting to stereotypes. Nathanna Érica aimed to create artwork that is respectful and authentic, showcasing the beauty and diversity of different cultures.

These illustrations serve as a reminder of the importance of cultural awareness, especially for children. By incorporating vibrant colors, different shapes, and patterns, Nathanna Érica's artwork pays homage to the nations and their traditions, encouraging a deeper understanding and appreciation of our global community.

These stunning paper illustrations by Nathanna Érica have been recognized for their creativity and ingenuity. In 2019, they were awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
